It Was Red and Yellow and Green and Brown…
One of the most well-known sayings in showbusiness, thanks to W.C. Fields, is “Never work with children or animals,” and while we can’t speak on working with animals, rehearsals and prep for Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat has proven Mr. Fields entirely wrong about working with children.
What truly stands out in our younger cast during rehearsals, is these young performers’ enthusiasm for the production as a whole. Acting as an audience for several scenes of the musical, their engagement and response to Joseph’s story only makes the watcher more intrigued by the events unfolding on stage. Their vocals for the ensemble numbers boost the depth and character of the songs to no end, and their love for performing and this show is very clear.
Arguably most evident in the work these young professionals have done in this production, is how they weave seamlessly with the older cast for the ensemble dance numbers. Thanks to their dedication and the hard work of Justin Walsh, these dances, which can involve having more than twenty cast members on the main stage at once, flow with ease, complimenting and elevating the catchy songs of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber immensely.
However, it’s not just their performances that deserve praise, it’s their work ethic, too. While other scenes are being rehearsed, they wait patiently in the audience, and encourage our older cast with applause and praise. They often join in the dances and songs from their seats, bringing excitement and laughter to the entire room, and reminding everyone what a truly special production this show is.
The hard work and dedication in every single rehearsal from this cast of all ages has been phenomenal, and is such a rare encapsulation of the true spirit of theatre, where fun and joy are equal to passion and focus.
With that, we can confidently say our audience is in for a treat. The work our performers are putting in is going to be evident in every performance, and we can’t wait for you to see it!
